Convenience is the enemy of security.

In mid-2023, Samsung made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Engineers, looking to debug semiconductor code quickly, pasted proprietary source code into the public version of ChatGPT.

They didn't just "show" the code to a bot. In the eyes of data sovereignty, they published it. They effectively uploaded their trade secrets to OpenAI's servers, granting the model permission to ingest that logic into its training weights.

This event, now known as "The Samsung Warning," is not an anomaly. It is standard behavior in 90% of Victorian businesses today.

The Mechanics of the Leak: Why It’s Permanent

The C-Suite often misunderstands why this is dangerous. They assume the data "disappears" when the chat window closes.

It does not. Public LLMs (Large Language Models) use user inputs to Retrain and Fine-Tune future versions.

  1. Ingestion: The proprietary code becomes part of the model's dataset.
  2. Weight Adjustment: The model learns the logic of your IP.
  3. Regurgitation: Six months later, a competitor asks ChatGPT, "How do I optimize a semiconductor process?" The model, drawing on its training, might output a solution based on your proprietary code.

Once data is baked into a model's weights, it is mathematically nearly impossible to remove. The leak is permanent.

The Human Factor

Why did the Samsung engineers do it? It wasn't malice. It was Friction.

  • The Gap: They had a problem (buggy code).
  • The Tool: ChatGPT could fix it in seconds.
  • The Barrier: Corporate IT provided no safe alternative.
